Designing Rhombus' Integration Marketplace

Problem

The Integrations webpage only listed partner names without additional information. We needed a way to highlight these partnerships and simplify the process of searching and understanding them.

Outcome

A fully functional Marketplace where users can sort and filter integrations. The new design increased user engagement by 44% and the engineering team has reported receiving more integration-specific inquiries, indicating that users are better informed.

Intro

One of the main reasons why Rhombus is quickly establishing itself as a leader in cloud-based physical security is its open API and exceptional partners.

The Head of Tech Partnerships and the VP of Engineering wanted to convert the Integration webpage into a Marketplace to further support and solidify this industry leadership.

My role

I supported the research efforts and led the design and development of this project from end to end. I collaborated with Jeremy Gulley (Head of Tech Partnerships), Malachi Padilla (developer) and Alana Joldersma (designer).

Problem

Limited Information

The Integration webpage only listed integrations without any additional information such as compatibility with Rhombus products, the benefits of using these integrations and developer specifications.

Expanding Catalog

As Rhombus' integrations continue to expand, we needed a way to highlight these partnerships and simplify the process of searching and understanding them.

Process

Research

When I was given this project, the engineering team had already identified preferred website features and noted essential elements, while also flagging UX pitfalls to avoid. They were unsure if a search field was necessary but wanted to incorporate filters and a potential way to display user reviews and ratings in the future.

Ideation

I used their insights as a foundation and conducted additional research by studying competitors’ solutions and exploring marketplaces from leading B2B companies. With this information in mind, I began sketching potential options until I found a solution that aligned with our goals.

Leveraging our updated Design System, and taking into account our ongoing website redesign, I began creating a high-fidelity prototype. Key elements I had to tackle included establishing a tagging system for collections, defining the behavior of active tags, refining the selection process and adding a form to request specific integrations.

Development

Once the prototype was approved by the Head of Tech Partnerships, I handed it off to our developer. Throughout the development process, we had many interactions to discuss search logic, feature list length, which selections would be carried over, and more. To infuse some visual appeal into our "Nothing Found" page, I used my illustration skills to make it more engaging.

Final Design

Outcome

The new Integration Marketplace has received enthusiastic praise from both the engineering and sales teams at Rhombus. Although it has only been live for a few months, our metrics indicate that the new design has increased user engagement by 44%. The engineering team has reported receiving more integration-specific inquiries, making their customer support more efficient. This also indicates that users are better informed on Rhombus’ tech partnerships.

We are eagerly looking forward to gathering more data on usage and its impact on revenue in the near future.
